Oprah’s new network is sure to start a television revolution. Just as television seemed to be drowning from the pop-up reality shows that tend to lack substance, Oprah steps in to take tv to the next level. I’m not saying that she can single handedly make all the sorry shows better, but she surely can give them a reason to step up their game. The OWN network will consist of reality shows that will touch the lives of many. I’m sure that we all will be able to benefit from one of the many shows on the line up. I’m personally looking forward to Master Class. This is a show that allows the viewers to go into the minds of the brilliant celebrities. Jay-z, Condoleezza Rice, Diane Sawyer and Sidney Poitier will be featured on the show, just to name a few. The network offers shows that cover love, cooking, health, and everything in between. I’m excited for this new addition to television, and more than anything I appreciate Oprah’s effort to make a positive mark on the world. To get channel information go to http://www.oprah.com/own and click the channel finder tab, then simply type in your zip code and your tv service provider and the correct channel should appear. The network kicks off January 1 2011, What a way to start the year!

At home STEM activity for kids: This week Beyond STEM students engaged in activities that really drove home the point that Software is just a set of instructions. Together we did the Peanut butter jelly sandwich challenge. Students had to write out instructions on how to make a sandwich.. I was the computer that tried to carry out the instructions... if a student wrote “put jelly on bread”.. I’d put the jar on top of the bag of bread.. Students soon learned that as a computer I could only do what the instructions tell me and nothing more! They went back debugged their code and tried again several times. This was a super fun activity to show them how computers interpret instructions and how we as software developers have to communicate with computers... easy enough right? If you have a young one at home try this activity with them. It’s an awesome STEM activity that teaches them the necessity of thoroughness when programming. Big Thank you to the brilliant Tanzania Sewell for allowing me to lead the last two sessions and for having the vision to put this awesome program together. #StemForTheWin #beyondStem #naptime #stemIsTheNewBlackHad the pleasure of leading today’s Beyond STEM session! It was a good time. Students learned about software development life cycle and design thinking. Glad I also had the opportunity to share my struggles and successes in my career thus far. I share my story with young people to remind them that perseverance is key and to never let people make them feel like they don’t belong. The Beyond STEM students are brilliant and give me much hope for our future. #STEMForTheWin #representationMatters #beyondStem #napTimeStill.Shout out to my designated homies. #siblingsdayLYND-OH

She’s amazing, isn’t she? I read some copies of ‘O’ a few years ago; I wish she’d distribute a UK version.
I am looking forward to OWN too. I may have to fight my boyfriend for the remote though.
I am curious to see how OWN takes shape as well as how it’s received. It’s a groundbreaking move that will change the way networks operate. It may not make a drastic change, but a change regardless.
